Our rail journey takes us along the Midland Line through the main divide, over spectacular viaducts through numerous tunnels and gorges, on a journey considered by some the top scenic rail journey in the world.
Shortly after merging from this alpine wonderland we transfer to the fabled Kumara Racecourse.
The original Grandstand and the Stewards room remain today and perhaps this step back into a bygone age accounts for the increasing charismatic attraction that the Annual Kumara race meeting holds for both the young and old.
With the township's population down to only a handful this swells as thousands make their annual pilgrimage from the North, South, East and West across the Tasman Sea to the Kumara gathering.
