FIORDLAND SEVEN-DAY WONDERLAND
DISCOVERY CRUISE
See the outstanding Doubtful Breaksea & Dusky Sounds
plus
Preservation & Chalky Inlets
The Southernmost fiords are magnificent:
Mountains rise straight from the sea. Rugged coastlines indented with sheltered waterways and dense rainforest together with a challenging climate make an incredible wilderness.
Our Fiordland journey begins with a cruise across island-studded Lake Manapouri to join the Milford Wanderer awaiting at either Long or Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound.
In its heyday Preservation Inlet, the southern most fiords were the most populated.
A whaling station was established at Cuttle Cove in the early 1800’s and coal mining was attempted in 1860.
However, it was gold that brought the next flurry of human endeavour and many hundreds of prospectors arrived in the 1880’s.
Putting ashore at Cromarty, a town of a thousand people in 1890, the feeble attempt to tame the landscape is evident. Be sure to click the link below to Puyesegur Point a lonely light house
Winter cruising in the remote southwest of Fiordland is a unique combination of adventure, history, natural beauty and good company.
Memories of an environment where nature rules and pioneers struggled to survive, will linger long after your return to civilisation.
With this extended seven day cruise option a one-way helicopter transfer between West Arm and Preservation Inlet increases exploration time.
